I will not be surprised (disappointed certainly) if within the next twenty years, Mandarin becomes the 'de facto' diplomatic language of East Asia the way French was the 'de facto' diplomatic language of Western Europe during the 1800's. Not only have they hosted the Olympics twice within two decades (2008 Summer and 2022 Winter), but they're trying to develop the premier diplomatic service in the world. Similarly, one can see how pre-eminent the rise of Chinese international influence/status has been since the 1990's. They trying to 'catch up' from a century of stagnation. They send their students abroad to the best colleges & universities in the world and invite foreign businesses & institutions to operate within China (as long as they don't violate CCP centralized control). Since the 1990's when Deng Xiaoping opened up China, they have focused on cultivating research & technology as well as economics & entrepreneurship.
The Chinese can't compete with the United States on #2, but they can and are doing their best to compete with the United States on points #1 and #3. This is the main reason the wars in Iraq/Afghanistan happened all allies did join us, although they were largely limited to special relationships with Western Europe such as Great Britain/France/Germany. which are nominally 'impartial' but consistently strive to promote American or allied interests & well-being.
This allows the United States to dictate international frameworks such as the UN, IMF, World Bank, etc. Singular global influence (and power) thanks to not being destroyed by WWII and having the Soviet Union implode during the 1990's. A relatively 'laissez-faire' society which allows for not only near-unparalleled creative freedom (leading to a flourishing of entertainment content) but also allows Pareto-like extremes to dominate via a focus on hyper-performance (American MNC's are equally unsympathetic, and even ruthless, with their own workers/customers as they are with foreign workers/customers in the pursuit of market share acquisition, building brand identity, and profit maximization).A highly-funded, distributed, and competitive research & technology apparatus which underlies American innovation and entrepreneurship (many industry magnates originate from students with technical or business backgrounds who commercialize cutting-edge products/services for market use).The United States attained global hegemony really through a combination of three major assets: colleges and universities, seeking degrees in STEM, economics & entrepreneurship, and, of course, International Relations/Global Affairs. The greatest threat the Chinese pose to the United States is not their naval forces in the South China Sea - its the hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands of Chinese students who study at U.S. The reality is that the United States has less to benefit from a mutual agreement with China, whereas China has more to benefit.Ĭhina has already secure the single greatest advantage the United States held a near monopoly on: access to world-class technology and business management.
